Rumah Sakit Pusat Pertamina (RSPP) is proud to be a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network (MCCN), a collaboration that extends our ability to access and leverage the wealth of medical knowledge and experience that Mayo Clinic has to offer. This partnership involves ongoing dialogue, document exchanges, and informal Q&A sessions, all customized to the specific objectives of RSPP. One of the significant benefits we derive from this membership is the opportunity to participate in Health Care Consulting (HCC), a program that allows us to tap into the expertise of Mayo Clinic for insights and guidance in enhancing our healthcare services.

One of our key areas of focus at RSPP is our Cancer Center, which stands as one of our centers of excellence. We are currently seeking to expand our oncology services, specifically our chemotherapy services. Our Care Network membership grants us the privilege of requesting a HCC project from Mayo Clinic, enabling us to gain a well-rounded understanding and practical knowledge about the development and efficient management of an outpatient chemotherapy unit.

On August 1, 2023, we met virtually with a team from Mayo Clinic, including Sikander Ailawadhi, M.D., director of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. Dr. Ailawadhi and members of Mayo Clinic’s oncology nursing team presented an invaluable and insightful discourse on the operations of an outpatient chemotherapy unit at Mayo Clinic. Their presentation revolved around the team approach and guiding principles employed at their center, with an emphasis on superior patient care, quality, and safety as the key goals of their healthcare model.

Dr. Ailawadhi, highlighted the built-in safeguards within Mayo Clinic’s electronic medical record system, which ensures standardized pre-medications for every regimen and appropriate timings for drug administration. This uniformity and standardization of care, as well as the compliance with drug labels for reimbursement, are essential aspects of their system.

While explaining the Mayo Clinic`s system and roles, Dr. Ailawadhi acknowledged that practices might vary in different countries including Indonesia. The goal, he emphasized, is not to recreate a Mayo Clinic unit in other countries, but to understand the model of care and principles, and to utilize available resources in the best way possible ensuring the delivery of safe and quality care to patients.

In conclusion, we at RSPP are deeply grateful for the valuable opportunity to collaborate and learn from Mayo Clinic through our membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network. The insights and knowledge we have gained, particularly on the operation and management of an outpatient chemotherapy unit, are significant to our ongoing efforts to expand and enhance our oncology services.
